Section 3: Using Kelli's Recipe Box

3.2 Navigation

Navigating and managing records in Kelli's Recipe Box is super simple. The navigation bar is shown in Figure 3.2.1.

  • Create a new record: click the plus button.
  • Delete the current record: click the trash can.
  • Find a record based on any criteria in any field: click the magnifying glass, then enter keywords in any combination of fields on the screen. Hit Enter on your keyboard to perform the search.
  • Show all records: hold down the Shift key on your keyboard while clicking the magnifying glass.
  • Previous record: click the left arrow.
  • Next record: click the right arrow.

3.3 Data Entry

There are three data entry sections in Kelli's Recipe Box: the header section (Figure 3.3.1), the File/Web tab (Figure 3.3.2), and the Custom tab (Figure 3.3.3). Any underlined labels on the screen are buttons, like links on the internet. Hover over a link to see a description of what the link does. Most of the data field label links paste the contents of the clipboard into the field. Copy something from a recipe, from a web page, etc., then click on the field label to paste the copied data into the field. The Go button to the right of the Location bar refreshes the File/Web view.

The recommended way to add recipes to the File/Web tab is as follows:

  • Save the recipe to your computer in any format you can view in a web browser (HTML, PDF, GIF, JPG, DOC, Plain Text, etc.).
  • Move or copy the recipe file into the Recipes folder located in the Kelli's Recipe Box folder.
  • Copy the name of the recipe file (or use the droplet, Figure 3.3.4), then click on the Location link in Kelli's Recipe Box.
  • Click the Go button to the right of the Location field.
  • The file should now appear in the browser window below the Location field.

It's also possible (though not recommended) to enter a web address into the Location field, after which clicking the Go button will show the web page in the browser window. However, saving files to your computer is recommended, since you don't have to worry about broken web links, web site closure, etc.

The Custom tab is for freeform recipe entry. This tab is self-explanatory.

If a file name or web address has been entered on the File/Web tab, using the arrow buttons to navigate to that record will cause the File/Web tab to be selected. If data is entered into the Ingredients field on the Custom tab, that tab will be selected when navigating to that record. If data is entered on both tabs, the view defaults to the File/Web tab.
